The question every couple asks their Chicago wedding transportation operator: "How many vehicles do we need?" The honest answer is: it depends on the size of your wedding party and your venue configuration. Here's the framework.
Define the Wedding Party First
For transportation purposes, the "wedding party" typically means the people who need to travel together in formal transport: bride, groom, bridesmaids, groomsmen, flower girls/ring bearers, and immediate parents. Extended family and guests are handled separately (usually by guest shuttles or independently).
Single-Vehicle Scenarios (4–14 people)
A wedding party of up to 14 can typically travel together in one vehicle — either a stretch limo, a stretch SUV, or a smaller party bus. This simplifies coordination: one pickup, one timeline, one driver to communicate with.
Two-Vehicle Scenarios (common Chicago approach)
When the wedding party exceeds 14, or when the couple wants a separate romantic vehicle from the larger party group, two vehicles makes sense:
- Vehicle 1: Couple's limo (just the couple, or couple + maid of honor + best man)
- Vehicle 2: Party bus or trolley for the full bridal party + groomsmen
Ceremony-to-Reception Distance Matters
If your ceremony and reception are at the same venue (a hotel or all-in-one event space), you may only need vehicle(s) for getting the wedding party TO the ceremony and the couple's exit. No inter-venue shuttling required.
If you have a ceremony venue, a photos location, and a reception venue — three distinct stops — a 4–5 hour vehicle booking is often more cost-effective than three separate pickups.
Guest Shuttles Are Separate
Guest shuttles are a completely separate booking from wedding party vehicles. See the wedding guest shuttle guide for that piece.
